The Plant: Kiwi
The kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa), native to Southern China, was originally known as Yang Tao. Its cultivation expanded globally in the early 20th century after seeds were introduced to New Zealand, where it was renamed kiwifruit for its resemblance to New Zealand's national flightless bird.
Kiwifruits feature a fibrous brown-green skin and bright green flesh with black edible seeds. Fresh kiwis are rich in carbohydrates, essential minerals, fruit acids, and vitamins (especially C, E, and A). They also contain potent phytonutrients and bioflavonoids such as quercetin, lutein, caffeic acid, and zeaxanthin.
